UNESCO World Heritage

Since 1997, Salzburg has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Culture, art and a unique history give the city a very special value! The cultural baroque city not only offers many sights, but also a special history, with its origins in interesting exchanges with neighbouring countries to the south – especially Italy. Salzburg is also known as the “Rome of the North”, as the sacred buildings with their baroque beauty, the town houses from the Middle Ages and the large squares inspired by Italy are still very well preserved today.

Salzburg’s old town also has a lot to offer: from historic buildings, moving stories and virtuosos of music to very special, yet hidden places that are waiting to be discovered a little off the beaten track. The old town is divided into the right and left sides by the Salzach river. However, only the left side of the old town, the older side where the Kaiviertel, Festungsberg and Mönchsberg are located, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This is also where the Festungsberg, on which the Hohensalzburg Fortress towers high above Salzburg, is located.

be Mozart. be art.

If you are looking for the house in which Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was born, you will find it here on the left bank of the Salzach in Getreidegasse. You can follow in Mozart’s footsteps everywhere in Salzburg’s old town. The musical prodigy and the Salzburg Festival, which first opened in 1920, made the city of Salzburg a centre for culture and art. Even today, the festival is still one of the most important events for concerts, opera and theatre. Whenever you hear “Jedermann!” over the cathedral square, the festival season begins in Salzburg.
